 Province of Fryslân

Netherlands

 Show Interreg NWE details

The Province of Fryslân works with local stakeholders to restore biodiversity, with a focus on pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hoverflies. At four diverse locations—ranging from farmland to business parks and plots between Natura 2000 areas—tailored measures are being explored to improve habitats based on landscape context. These efforts are shaped in collaboration with municipalities, water boards, farmers, entrepreneurs, citizen initiatives, a university of applied sciences, and NGOs, building on existing projects. Planned actions include planting trees, hedgerows, and flowering field margins, alongside alternative land management, education, and community outreach. Naturalis and citizen scientists will monitor outcomes. The integrated approach strengthens ecological quality.

 Province of West Flanders

Belgium

Province of West-flandersleads the PWV Living Lab is situated along the Trimaarzate, a 7.8 km green corridor built on an old railway line. Today, it’s a popular walking and cycling path that crosses through four municipalities.A 500-meter-wide perimeter on both sides of the corridor has been defined as a test area. Here, the Province of West Flanders combines pollinator-friendly mowing with smart landscape design to create a welcoming space for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. We do this together with local people, farmers, nature organisations and municipalities. The idea? To find practical, scalable solutions to boost pollinator biodiversity and connect green spaces in a context of fragmented land use.
